Five Point Plan

  • Hygienic teat management - combined with sound housing management
  • Prompt treatment of clinical mastitis
  • Dry cow therapy
  • Culling chronically affected cows
  • Correct maintenance of the milking machine
Mastitis is costing the UK dairy industry around £90 million a year and is the third most common reason for cows to be culled.
Mastitis and SCCs are minimised by the use of antibiotics at drying off and by treating clinical cases during lactation. But there is growing concern that the use of antibiotics will be restricted or prohibited. In fact in some European countries, the use of antibiotics is already restricted to vet administration.

Mastitis needs to be treated quickly if further milk losses are to be minimised and pain suffered by the cow relieved. For the herdsman, this usually means using a broad spectrum antibiotic which may not be the best treatment for the particular organism responsible for the infection.

There are in fact around 140 known causes of mastitis, but the three most common ones are Streptococcal, Staphylococcal and Coliform bacteria.

By identifying the cause of the occurrence, both the treatment of the clinical symptoms and the underlying factors causing the disease can be tackled more specifically. Good, effective therapy will reduce the financial losses from mastitis, benefit dairy cow welfare and improve milk quality and safety.
