Mastitis
needs to be
treated quickly if further milk losses are to be minimised and
pain suffered by the cow relieved. For the herdsman, this usually
means using a broad spectrum antibiotic which may not be the best
treatment for the particular organism responsible for the infection.
There
are in fact around 140 known causes of mastitis, but the three
most common ones are Streptococcal, Staphylococcal and
Coliform bacteria.
By identifying
the cause of the occurrence, both the treatment of the clinical
symptoms and the underlying factors causing the disease can be
tackled more specifically. Good, effective therapy will reduce
the financial losses from mastitis, benefit dairy cow welfare
and improve milk quality and safety.
